The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church (GOYA) is a youth group comprised of 13-18 year old youth members of the parish. Each year they elect an executive board – consisting of a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary – which serves as excellent training for these potential future Parish Council members.
An active group, they have been involved as altar servers, students in Sunday School and Greek School and have performed community service at the parish and elsewhere; some of them play basketball for in the Metropolis of Boston basketball league.
GOYA’s main fundraiser is hosting the Mothers’ Day Luncheon – an annual event first held in May of 1970 – which the entire parish looks forward to in anticipation. GOYA members choose a Mother of the Year and a Grandmother of the Year – typically mothers who have either assisted the GOYA in an extraordinary way during the past year, or who have shown exceptional stewardship within the parish, or who may have been an “unsung hero.” After the luncheon, the GOYA members finally reveal the closely-guarded names of the honorees to the delight of one and all and award each surprised recipient with long-stemmed red roses and an engraved plaque.
Other activities they participate in include a 30 hour famine (an international youth movement to fight hunger where the youth choose not to eat for 30 hours in order to raise money to feed hungry children around the world), visiting the elderly at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, bringing food and supplies on visits to the Philoxenia House in Brookline, and supporting parish events such as the annual Church Festival.
